Forget traditional tank Volibear! This experimental AP build turns the thunder god into a devastating lightning machine. The strategy revolves around combining The Relentless Storm with Statikk Shiv to punish enemies standing near minion waves.
This is a high-risk, high-reward build. You sacrifice durability for explosive damage. Snowball early and become unstoppable, or fall behind and get punished.
HOW THE BUILD WORKS
Volibear gains attack speed by stacking his passive through attacks and abilities. At five stacks, his attacks unleash lightning that damages the target and four nearby enemies.
Statikk Shiv adds bouncing lightning that applies on-hit effects to secondary targets. Together, these mechanics create powerful area damage, especially around minion waves.
Attack minions when enemy champions stand nearby to pressure them with chain lightning without committing to a direct fight.
EARLY GAME — LEVELS 1–5
Start with Long Sword and rush Statikk Shiv.
Unlock E first for farming, damage and shielding. Take Q at level 2 for mobility and stuns, then W at level 3 for sustained combat.
Avoid unnecessary fights before your first completed item. Focus on farming, managing the wave and punishing enemy mistakes. Your passive naturally damages nearby minions, so be careful not to push the lane unintentionally.
At level 5, Stormbringer allows aggressive tower dives by temporarily disabling enemy turrets. However, you are not invulnerable. Track the enemy jungler before diving.
WHEN TO SKIP MEJAI'S
If you are losing lane, dying frequently or facing dangerous crowd control, avoid Mejai's and choose a more reliable item.
- Zhonya's Hourglass — against assassins, burst damage and dangerous engages. Use Stasis to survive critical enemy abilities.
- Banshee's Veil — against magic damage and dangerous spells. Its spell shield blocks the next hostile ability.
- Amaranth's Twinguard — against mixed damage in extended teamfights. Replace a damage item when durability becomes essential.
Remember that this is a damage-focused build. If you need multiple defensive items, a traditional bruiser setup may be more effective.
RUNES AND ABILITY ORDER
Lethal Tempo increases attack speed and helps maintain passive stacks. Triumph restores health after takedowns, Last Stand improves damage at low health, and Legend: Alacrity provides additional attack speed. Transcendence reduces ability cooldowns.
For difficult lanes, consider Brutal, Last Stand, Legend: Haste and Bone Plating. Replace Bone Plating with Second Wind against constant poke damage.
Ability priority: W → Q → E. Upgrade R at levels 5, 9 and 13.
Summoner spells: Flash + Ignite for aggression, or Flash + Teleport for safer lane management.
COMBOS AND TRADING
- Short trade: E → Q → basic attack → W → disengage.
- Extended fight: maintain passive stacks and recast W during Frenzy for increased damage and healing.
- Aggressive engage: R → E → Q → W → basic attacks. Use your ultimate to close gaps or reposition.
Place E slightly ahead of moving enemies. The stun from Q helps keep them inside the lightning strike.
DANGEROUS MATCHUPS
- Vayne — kites, knocks you away and deals maximum-health damage. One of your hardest matchups.
- Teemo — blinds your attacks and constantly harasses you.
- Jax — avoids basic attacks and disrupts your engage. Never force trades into Counter Strike.
- Fiora — can parry your Q and punish predictable engagements.
- Kennen and Karma — dangerous poke, crowd control and strong disengage.
Against ranged champions, prioritize safe farming, E shielding and punishing positioning mistakes. Do not chase without jungle vision.
MID AND LATE GAME
Once Statikk Shiv is completed, pressure side lanes and exploit enemy minion waves to spread lightning damage.
Try to prepare passive stacks before teamfights when possible. Attack nearby targets to build momentum without exposing yourself unnecessarily.
Avoid initiating directly into five enemies unless you have sufficient protection. Let your frontline engage, approach from a flank and focus vulnerable carries.
Use Zhonya's after aggressive engagements to survive retaliation.
When ahead, pressure side lanes, force enemy rotations and secure objectives with your team. Protect your Mejai's stacks instead of gambling on unnecessary kills.

This build rewards aggression, smart positioning and creative use of minion waves. Maintain your lightning stacks, avoid unfavorable fights and protect your lead.
